We would love to have you as a volunteer or intern with the Bliss Women and Children Project! We are currently looking for interns and volunteers of any background, and would be very happy to work with you to come up with a project that will best meet your needs, as well as those of the women and children who participate in our projects.
Please find the answers to some frequently asked questions below. Meanwhile, if you have any other questions, please contact blisswomenandchildrenproject@yahoo.com
Does it cost money to intern with the Bliss Women and Children Project? No. We do not charge interns for the experience of coming to work with us. We believe that the skills and effort you bring to us, through coming to work for our projects, is sufficient, and we are very grateful for this!! However, unfortunately we are unable to provide a stipend, and are unable to cover your expenses such as airfare, cost of living, etc.
Will I have the opportunity to get hands-on experience? Absolutely. You will be working directly with the more than 100 women and over 80 children who participate in our projects.
How expensive is life in Nakuru? Life in Nakuru is as expensive as you would like to make it. However, a basic budget may consist of the following:
- monthly rent for a small house: 4,500 – 6,000 kshs;
- food – 150 kshs per day
- meal in a decent restaurant – 300 kshs per meal
- transport – 40 – 100 kshs per day
How will I get to the project? If you are arriving to Kenya by air, you will land at Jomo Kenyatta airport in Nairobi. Someone from the Bliss Women and Children Project will meet you at the airport (please, please make sure we know your flight itinerary well in advance!) We will then take a taxi from the airport into Nairobi, where we will either stay one night, or take a matatu (mini bus) directly to Nakuru, where our project is located. If you would like to spend a day or two in Nairobi (to get your feet on the ground or see some of the city’s wonderful sights) please let us know in advance so we can meet you at another time. Once in Nakuru, we will drive you out to Kaptembwao so you can meet our wonderful women and children!!
What should I bring? You should bring the things you need for daily life! Also, if you plan to travel on safari at any point, please bring any equipment you may require, as you probably won’t be able to purchase this in Nakuru. Having said this, all basic necessities (food, shampoo etc.) are very available in Nakuru.
Also, please feel very free to bring any donations you would like for our women and children!! If you like, we can provide you with a specific donations list – however, the reality is that we need everything! We have a particular need for children’s clothing, ages 3-7 years, and would be so grateful to receive this! If you need a letter addressed to your airline for excess baggage, please let us know, and we will be happy to provide this. However, please also note that it may be better to purchase donations such as school equipment here in Nakuru – it is cheaper, and this would help us to support local businesses.\

8. How much does it cost to go to the Nakuru National Park?Nakuru is very famous for its national park – and for good reason, as the park is stunningly beautiful and full of wild animals! It costs $60 USD for foreigners to enter the park – but it is well worth the price, as the park is huge and…well….it really is impressive.
